Role summary

Local Guardians are the primary moderators of each Pet Care Hub. For a 3-month volunteer term, you’ll review join requests and and moniter member posts within your assigned community.

You’ll be assigned one city hub and receive dedicated support from the core team (available 24/7), along with access to onboarding tools, moderation manuals and regular check-ins via our mod group chat.

This position is best for detail-oriented people who can check in for a few minutes daily, respond to requests and act decisively when community guidelines are breached.

Open to applicants based anywhere.

Purpose of the role

Pet Care Hubs is seeking dedicated Local Guardians to help moderate our digital community spaces and ensure hubs stay warm, welcoming and aligned with our community values.

Local Guardians are the primary caretakers of their chosen Hub, responsible for reviewing local requests, managing role approvals, and setting the tone for weekly activity and safety.

You’ll be supported by our full-time core team and a wider network of Hub Guides and Floater Mods, as well as a Notion knowledge base of community resources. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who loves keeping an eye on group chats, is structured in their decision-making, confident in monitoring tone, safeguarding and content breaches.

Key responsibilities

  • Approve or reject form requests via shared daily request log

  • Action urgent help requests within 24 hours of being flagged

  • Moderate hub activity daily, confirm or deactivate those against community guidelines

  • Remove spam and unsafe messaging in line with the community rules

  • Report policy violations and flag them in the central Incident Register

  • Help ensure local service issues in the Pet Care Hubs are seen promptly

  • Share weekly updates about hub activity and moderation trends in the Mod group chat

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Confident using WhatsApp daily

  • Calm and composed under pressure

  • Confident in making fair decisions and able to enforce boundaries gently but firmly

  • Comfortable communicating with clarity and care in large group chats

  • Able to review and moderate WhatsApp messages with sound judgment

  • Reliable with short, daily time commitment

  • Ideally familiar with community guidelines, safeguarding principles, or peer support environments

  • Respectful written communicator with strong emotional intelligence

  • Familiarity with simple tools like Google Sheets and Notion (or willing to learn)

  • Background in customer service, hospitality, community support, or member satisfaction

Bonus if you have:

  • Experience moderating social media, online communities or group chats

  • Familiarity with handling shared access, such as admin tools, group settings or managing basic budgets or digital assets

  • Experience working with data, content logs, or team-facing documentation (not personal/sensitive info)

  • Knowledge of safeguarding or conflict de-escalation in digital or peer-led spaces

  • A passion for local community building and pet welfare

  • Previous volunteer, peer supportor cooperative project experience
